The longer lighter evenings of Spring are the perfect motivation to start walking more, and ‘Living Streets’ (a UK based charity) together with their partner ‘Change 4 Life’, aims to create a walking nation. Running their ‘National Walking Month’ campaign throughout the month of May, we just so happen to have perfectly timed it with our Just Walk event!

Did you know that walking 20 minutes every day can boost your mood, burn calories and improve your heart and blood circulation? In fact, a brisk walk for 30 minutes every day is said to reduce your risk of a stroke by 27%. The benefits are high, the cost is low and you can even raise money doing it for a worthy cause should you wish too.

For more than 85 years Living Streets have been campaigning to improve the streets, roads and the experience to enjoy walking. This has led to the first zebra crossings and finding ways to constantly improve our community; from dropped kerbs to major changes in speed limits.

Living Streets is also promoting walking to school as part of their national campaign, school children wanting to do their part can do so on 21st - 25th May. Their ambition is that every child walks to school, and say “A generation ago, 70% of us walked to school – now it’s less than half.” They want to reverse this decline and for children to be energised and empowered, and to make walking to school their natural choice. You can find out more information here.

A survey of 1,000 parents commissioned from YouGov found that one in four parents said they did not consider walking their child to school. However, four out of five said they had walked to school when they were young. You and your family can play your part this May!

Join us on May 12th at Just Walk and enjoy the stunning views from Goodwood Racecourse. We offer the unique challenge of walking the distance that best suits you, whether it’s 10km or 25km (that you can do with your children and as a family), or the 35km, 45km or the BIG 60km. This walk can be to raise money for charity, for a personal achievement or a fun healthy walk with friends and family.

Hi, I’m Craig Peters and I’m delighted to be working with Just Walk as their resident Personal Trainer to provide lots of helpful fitness and nutrition advice to help prepare you for your Just Walk challenge.

To ensure you are feeling great and as prepared as can be in the lead up to your Just Walk challenge it’s important to think about what you are going to eat pre-walk and during the event to help you with endurance and maintain your energy levels. Here is what I would suggest:

Before: The day and evening prior to the event you should look to take on a decent level of carbohydrates, which provide energy and are the most important source of fuel for exercise. Your body can store small amounts of carbohydrate in the muscles and liver as glycogen, but these stores are limited so you need to make sure you’re fully fuelled before the event.

Personally, I love a bit of sweet potato, quinoa, chickpeas or lentils, and a good intake of any high-level carbohydrate foods the night before will help to top up your glycogen (energy) stores.
Be sure to opt for wholegrain varieties such as whole-wheat pasta, brown rice or wholemeal bread as the fibre in whole grains provide a slower release of energy – you don’t want to go off full throttle only to physically crash 20km in. Other good sources of carbohydrates include potatoes (with skins), couscous, beans and pulses. However, most importantly, remember to add generous portions of fruit and vegetables and get your protein from the likes of fish, chicken, turkey, beans, eggs, nuts or lower fat dairy foods.

During: You’ll certainly need something during your walk to give you a much-needed boost when you “hit the wall”, and we’ve all been there! The exact number of calories that you use up will depend on a range of factors, including walking speed, distance, weight, age, gender and muscle tone. However, an average woman weighing 70kg and walking 3 miles per hour (1 mile every 20 minutes) would burn around 230 calories an hour.

When I need an extra energy boost, a banana combined with natural crunchy peanut butter with no palm oil is the perfect snack (you just can’t beat it for me!). Fruit is a healthy snack and the natural sugars will provide a quick energy boost. Different fruits contain various vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre. Try bananas, apples, berries, orange segments and grapes.

In addition, fruity flapjacks and granola bars are both very practical in terms of carrying the items, whilst also a great source of energy. The fruit contained within these products will give you a quick boost of energy due to the sugar content, whereas oats are a starchy carbohydrate, which provides longer lasting energy. Oats also contain fibre, which may help you to feel fuller for longer.

Fluids: You don’t need me to say it; drink plenty of water. However, you must remain aware that there are dangers in drinking too much, which can result in hyponatremia: low blood salt level and fluid overload. Then, on the other-hand, you risk drinking too little and becoming dehydrated. A lot will depend on various factors such as the weather (bear in mind it will be May and Spring should have well and truly arrived), your body’s reaction to the demands of the event, sweat rate, age, etc.
Your body is under extreme stress during long distance walking.

You need to ensure you have access to fluids (there are plenty of water stops along the route) and ultimately that you are able to drink when thirsty. Don't risk running dry; wearing a hydration pack to ensure you will have fluids available at all times is really beneficial.

The key is to respect the Just Walk event, respect the BIG 60km epic route and respect the terrain; both the inclines and declines. Remember, if you are not mentally ready, you are never physically prepared. That’s the key with anything, but more so when it comes to physical activity such as this.

Good luck!
Enjoy it; soak it up, drink it in, and be mindful, as events such as these don’t come around every day.

Hi, I’m Craig Peters and I’m delighted to be working with Just Walk as their resident Personal Trainer to provide lots of helpful fitness advice and suggested training routines to help prepare you for your Just Walk challenge.

Firstly, congratulations on making the courageous choice to take part in the 12th annual Just Walk event and participate in the BIG 60km! You are in for an experience you’re likely never to forget; the spectacular and mesmerising views of the South Downs is something you’ll have a chance to admire throughout the duration of your trek, you will create an unbreakable bond with your fellow walkers and achieve a truly astounding goal.

But how do you prepare physically and mentally for endurance walks of what can certainly be a gruelling task, even for some seasoned walkers?
Let’s start with training; the following suggested routines will hit all the right areas to help prepare you for the BIG 60km Just Walk with upper body strength, cardio fitness, core stability and enhanced flexibility. What’s more, building confidence in your training will also help ensure you are mentally prepared too. You may ask how I know this and it’s because I have personally created it and have completed it many times myself. The following three days have been taken directly from my own six-week personal training programme which is available from my website and if you’d like to know a little more about my experience and qualifications, please see the end of this blog.

Stretching and Cooling Down

It’s very important when taking on an extreme physical walking challenge that you stretch regularly after your exercising / training in order to keep your muscles strong, healthy, flexible and most importantly injury free.

With a few of these exercises you will be required to have access to a set of dumbbells and I also suggest using a mat for your core and abs works.

Hi, I’m Craig Peters and I’m delighted to be working with Just Walk as their resident Personal Trainer to provide lots of helpful fitness advice and suggested training routines to help prepare you for your Just Walk challenge.

Firstly, congratulations on making a great choice to take part in the 12th annual Just Walk event and participate in either the 10km or 25km route! You are in for an experience you’re likely never to forget; the spectacular and mesmerising views of the South Downs is something you’ll have a chance to admire throughout the duration of your trek, you will create an unbreakable bond with your fellow walkers and achieve a truly astounding goal.

But how do you prepare physically and mentally for this type of challenge?
Let’s start with training; the following suggested routines will hit all the right areas to help prepare you for the 10km or 25km Just Walk with upper body strength, cardio fitness, core stability and enhanced flexibility.
Warm-ups and Training

I highly recommend training at least three times a week starting a minimum of four weeks prior to the event (even better if you are well underway with your training already!) With a few of these exercises you will be required to have access to a set of dumbbells and I also suggest using a mat for your core and abs works.

Calling any early risers wanting to help support our walkers and enjoy a unique experience the morning of Saturday 12th May 2018 behind the scenes at Goodwood Racecourse: we’re looking for volunteers… the super-duper kind!

If you are enthusiastic, friendly, helpful and committed, we would love to have you join our volunteer team. Your duties will include meeting and greeting new arrivals, helping with the registration process, signing people in, and possibly a few other small jobs that often present themselves on the day. You’ll play an important role in ensuring our Just Walk 2018 event goes off without a hitch and all our walkers have a stress-free start to their challenge.

As one of our valued team members, you’ll experience the amazing atmosphere at Goodwood Racecourse for yourself. As our walkers gather, you’ll be swept up in the excitement as the anticipation for the start of the event reaches fever pitch. Enjoy hearing previous ‘Just Walkers’ regale one another with past Just Walk stories and watch as old friends catch up and new friendships are formed.

Volunteering is a rewarding experience and a great opportunity to get involved and give something back. If you live local to Goodwood Racecourse, looking for event work experience for your CV or planning on coming down to support friends, family or a work team, why not offer a couple of hours of your time and do your bit as well. Aside from your volunteering duties, there will be plenty of time to wave the walkers off as they set out on their chosen route, and to be there as they cross the finish line offering words of encouragement as well as lots of cheering and clapping.

If you’re an early bird and love the idea of mucking in, we’d love your help. Your ‘superness’ will be rewarded with a FREE bacon sandwich and a steamy hot cuppa waiting for you upon your arrival.

Interested? If you are ready and willing to volunteer your time and put your super-duperness out there, please contact Kate or Gemma on 01297 300 504 for further information.

The Christmas holidays are nearly upon us, giving friends and families the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together while enjoying the great outdoors. Wrap yourself up with the new hats, scarves and gloves you received for Christmas, and head outside for a refreshing walk. Afterwards, you can head home or find a cosy pub or café with a crackling log fire and enjoy a warming hot chocolate or two!

Whether you choose to walk along a seaside promenade, take a ramble through the countryside or stroll through woodland, the fresh air will blow away any lingering cobwebs you may have from over-indulging over Christmas, plus its great training for those of you taking on the Just Walk challenge next year.

We’ve put together this handy guide to 5 of our favourite festive rambling routes around England covering walks in Sussex, Surrey, London, Yorkshire and Devon.

We’ve deliberately picked walking routes that come in at less than 10km, making them more suitable for younger families, varied fitness levels and ages alike, take a look and see…

1. Seven Sisters & Birling Gap, Sussex

Starting point: Tiger Inn, Birling Gap
Distance: 9km (5.5 miles)
Time to complete: 2 hours (average)

A classic winter’s walk that takes on one of the UK’s most photographed stretches of coastline, the chalk cliffs of The Seven Sisters. Start at the Tiger Inn and follow the South Downs Way along the coast from Birling Gap to Belle Tout Lighthouse (which has featured in numerous films and TV programmes) to make the most of The Seven Sisters before circling back inland to the pub.

Top Tip: It’s easier to walk this loop to the coast and back anticlockwise so the prevailing wind is at your back.
A good, decent pair of walking boots and walking socks are essential, and it is vital that you train in them so they are already broken in for the day to avoid blisters and general discomfort.

All charities will want to know that you are taking part in a fundraising event for them and it is a good idea to make contact early on. Once you are signed up, contact the charity (their contact details can be found on their website) and tell them about Just Walk. Ask for a fundraising pack which will include sponsor forms, and ask if they are associated with an online giving site such as Just Giving. If they wish to know more about the event, please ask them to contact us directly and we will be happy to answer their questions. It is important to remember to send all of the money you have raised directly to the charity and not to us at Just Walk, Across the Divide.

We are delighted to say that our amazing supporters and participants have raised more than £1 million from our ‘JUST WALK’ events for a variety of worthwhile charities since we started back in 2007.

Due to the uniqueness of our challenge, it means that once you have registered and paid your total event fee, every penny you raise will then go directly to the charity of your choosing. Plus, if you add the option of Gift Aid, it will increase the money you raise even more.

Don’t worry if you can’t see your chosen charity on our list on the website, you can still choose any charity or worthy cause that you wish to raise money for. Just include the charity name when completing your registration and you can start supporting them straight away.

So, if you want to feel good and give something back to a charity that is close to your heart, click here and book your place today.

Our BIG 60km Just Walk is the perfect route for those who are physically fit, mentally tough, and those wanting to take on an ambitious challenge. Whether you are doing this as a personal challenge, a memory walk, or to raise funds for a charitable cause – you will not be disappointed with this route!

Not for the faint-hearted, the BIG 60km offers many highs throughout your walk (and that’s not just the hills!), it provides a great variety of terrain and stunning scenery, and is the perfect way to experience the broad and sweeping landscapes of West Sussex. The feeling of exhilaration and the tremendous sense of achievement when you cross the finish line will make it all worthwhile.

Here is a little taster of what you can expect when walking the 60km route:

The first 3km: Once you exit the racecourse you’ll go off-road through the woods and into Selhurst Park. Despite being deep in woodland, you’ll enjoy glimpses of the stunning views to the south including Halnaker Windmill before crossing into Eartham parish.

6km – 13km: Amble through the wild coppiced chestnut woods and rolling arable fields following the Monarch’s Way for a small section. The paths through the woods are 4x4 tracks and, if wet, will be a little muddy in places. Heading south you’ll follow bridleways to picturesque Slindon with its thatched cottages.

13km – 21km: So far there have been very few hills, but the first incline comes after crossing the A29 as you pass through the last of the coppiced woods (complete with deer and a wide range of birdlife). From the top of Rewell Wood, this is where the 40km route splits from the 60km route - make sure you follow the 60km route signs!

From Rewell Wood you’ll descend into Arundel and walk through the streets of this historic castle town and head into Arundel Park, for your third well-earned rest.

21km – 27km: Your surroundings change dramatically in this section of the route, as you drop down and then climb up through rolling parkland before descending to the River Arun. Once again in wet weather, this path by the river can have puddles and be muddy underfoot. After 1km you’ll leave the riverside and continue North where you’ll continue to walk for a further 1km before encountering The South Downs Way for the first time.

27km – 38km: At this stage, all your training will be kicking in as your body starts to be tested. This next section is the longest between Power Stations so it will feel like a tough stint; on the plus side though it is the flattest section! You’ll walk through the quiet village of Amberley and cross the flat and eerie Amberley Brooks. These are low lying brooks and will be wet and muddy and even high in water at some points, so be prepared and have some dry socks to change into. You will now be past the halfway point (hooray!) and after re-joining the River Arun for a short distance you’ll start heading West. Crossing the A29 again at Coldwaltham, you’ll head along sections of quiet county lanes and forest tracks and into a private estate, the perfect rest stop for a well-earned drink and bite to eat.

38km – 45km: You will start heading towards the village of Bignor and approaching the biggest and most challenging climb of the whole walk; as you walk up Bignor Hill. In total, this is a 170-metre continuous ascent and will take you to the peak of the South Downs, as you once again join the South Downs.

45km – 48km: Once rested and the views explored, you’ll be pleased to know this section of the route is surprisingly flat. You’ll walk over the open chalk downs before dropping down and crossing the A285 (this is a busy road so please cross with care). You’ll now be back on The South Downs Way and will start climbing upwards again, although don’t worry; this is steep but short at only 110 metres.

48km – 55km: You are now at Graffham Down, famous for its unique wildlife. Shortly after here at 50km, after what will seem like a very long walk over the hills, you’ll start the long drop down through forestry towards Charlton.

55km – 60km: After following the route through the village's houses and cottages you’ll start a long, steep ascent up onto a track and back towards the racecourse. Here you’ll have your first glimpse of the finish, as you start walking along the final stretch into the grounds of Goodwood and the finish line!

Congratulations - you’ve just walked the BIG 60km!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">Well, what can we say about this year’s Just Walk 2017 event apart from a massive THANK YOU to each and every one of you; our Just Walkers, supporters and volunteers.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">With a record-breaking 1,121 walkers registered for the challenge for our 11th year, you can all proudly say you really did “Walk the distance and made a difference”. Whether it was fundraising for a cause close to your heart, a special memory walk for your loved one no longer with us, or as a personal challenge on your own, with a friend or with a group - well done. Those of you who offered support and helped us sign walkers in, a sincere thank you from the bottom of our hearts; you really did help towards making the event run smoothly.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">What an amazing day with lots of laughter, a few tears (of joy), new friends made, and many stories shared. The atmosphere throughout the day was incredible from start to finish. There was a real buzz around Goodwood Racecourse in the morning as everyone registered, chatted with other walkers and then gathered for the warm-up before setting off to enjoy the beautiful scenery that our Just Walk routes offer.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">We witnessed real enthusiasm and comradery throughout the day, which helped many of you (including us) through the last 3km trek up ‘that’ hill and back to the finish line. It’s not until you look back down once you’ve reached the top, you realise just how steep that hill actually is and what an achievement it is to conquer!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">Watching and cheering our walkers as they passed the final bend, down the home straight, and through to the finish line is one of our most memorable moments of the day, and each year it continues to grow bigger and better. We understand how much effort everyone puts in to this event, and the sheer joy and pleasure on your faces as you complete the challenge makes our job so worthwhile.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">We hope your Just Walk medal is proudly on display and your memories are as fabulous as ours. We have now emailed over your Just Walk certificate, but if you haven’t received it, please <span style="color: #93c47d; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;">email<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; margin: 0px;"> us, and we will send one to you.

The wait is nearly over! Just Walk, one of the UK’s biggest walking challenges, will take place this Saturday 13th May at Goodwood Racecourse, Chichester. While we let that sink in, we’d like to remind you why we’re here and of the treat in store for you (or could be in store for you, if you sign up here – there’s still time!).

Organised by our global sister company Across the Divide, Just Walk allows you to choose the length of your walk – between 10km and 60km – in order to raise money for a charity or cause of your choice.

All of the routes are circular, and you’re offered the opportunity to explore the rolling hills and landscape of the West Sussex countryside, starting and finishing at the iconic Goodwood Racecourse, near Chichester.

Your entry fee for the day’s walk includes medals and certificates, logistical and medical support, drinks, snacks and plenty of encouragement and cheers from the Just Walk team.
Those of you who walk further than 20km will get a free packed lunch, while those walking further than 40km will be provided with a hot breakfast at the start. There will also be hot soup for those walking the 40km route and a hot meal for anyone walking 60km.

Why else should you Just Walk? Well…
Mark Hannaford, Head Walker and founder of Just Walk and Across the Divide, said, “Just Walk is about getting as many people outside and active as possible, while raising money for worthy causes, and that’s why we’re delighted to have had over 1000 registrations so far.

“With our team of organisers and helpers, walkers can be sure that everyone’s safe and well looked-after, and can focus on putting one foot in front of the other.

“It doesn’t matter if you walk 10km or 60km, it all helps, and you’ll struggle to find a better-looking part of the country for a challenge like this!”

Prices range between £20 and £70 for adults (depending on length of route) and £7.50 and £15 for under-16s.

Although you’re are free to raise money for whatever cause you choose, our two charity partners are particularly close to our hearts: Rockinghorse and First Days.

Tickets are still available for Just Walk 2017, so if you haven’t signed up yet, now’s your chance – just click here.

Rockinghorse works to improve the lives of sick children in Sussex, and First Days distributes clothing, toys, equipment and furniture to deprived children.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You’ve booked your Just Walk place, your training is underway but how else can you prepare for the big day?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A big part of being prepared for any physical challenge is making sure you have the right equipment for the job. Not only will it give you more confidence in taking part in the challenge; as the saying goes, you need to ‘dress for success’, but by having the right kit, it will ensure you are as comfortable as can be when taking part in the Just Walk challenge.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Using our experience of the event and speaking with our ‘Just Walker’s’, here are the essentials you will need to bring with you on the day:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What to wear on a long walk (kit check):
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Comfortable sturdy walking boots (rather than trainers), preferably waterproof. We recommend you buy the best pair of walking boots you can afford. They need to support your feet, keep them warm and dry, and most importantly they should feel comfortable! Now is the perfect time to buy them so you can train in them, and 'break them in' to minimise blisters on the day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Thin lightweight trousers or shorts. Whatever you choose to wear, ensure you train in the clothes you will wear on the day to minimise friction burn and chafing.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Walking socks. Try a few options out first to see what suits your feet and boots. A good pair of socks absorb shock, help prevent blisters, regulate temperature and promote good circulation
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Layers of clothing. At least two thin top layers, so you can adjust your temperature more easily.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• A lightweight, zip-up jumper. A medium fleece top would be perfect and the zip-up enables you to adjust the airflow to your body.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Walking poles. A personal choice as to whether you will find these useful. Give them a go in your training programme and see how you get on with them, they can be very beneficial in hill climbing and descending.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Top Tip: Wear every item of clothing you are planning to wear on the day, on at least 3 training walks. There is nothing worse than an annoying label you discover a mile in to the walk!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What to carry on a long walk (useful items):
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Waterproof jacket and trousers
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Sunhat, with rim if possible
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• A couple of spare top layers including a warm fleece (see above)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Sun lotion / block
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Spare walking socks
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Water bottle or Camelback/Platypus style container that holds 2 litres (something that can be refilled at power stations)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Small first aid kit (plasters and Vaseline for potential chafing)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Mobile phone (fully charged)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Camera
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Spare money, just in case
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Snacks to sustain energy
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">• Sunglasses
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Top Tip: Choose a rucksack that is lightweight yet strong. Padded shoulder straps and a harness that goes around your chest and stomach to give your back added support helps distribute the weight of items inside your bag, making it easier to walk and maintain energy levels.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now you have your kit checklist (not including the kitchen sink) to get your prepared for the big day, it leaves us with just one last message…
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Good luck and enjoy!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

We can’t wait to say hello to everyone and cheer you round the course, roll on Saturday 13th May!”

<span style="font-family: "muli"; font-size: 14pt; margin: 0px;">

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">Having just celebrated our tenth anniversary
year, we decided to catch up with one of our veteran Just Walkers and find out
what it is about the day that keeps bringing them back.

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">We
caught up with 67-year-old James Kinsella, who kindly agreed to share his
poignant story that inspired him to take on the Just Walk challenge; one of sheer
determination, a big heart and an unwavering dedication to keeping on top of
his game.

“Just
Walk seemed like the perfect fit”

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">Just Walk (JW).<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> <span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">What is it about Just Walk
that first attracted you?

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">James Kinsella (JK).<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> <span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">The main draw for me was
the rural setting; I grew up on a farm in Ireland, which has given me a love
for horses, farms and fields – it all holds a very special place in my life; my
memories. Just Walk seemed like the perfect fit.

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">J.W.<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> The South Downs certainly does sound befitting;
how much of the beautiful scenery do you like to experience each year?

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">J.K.<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> Well, I usually walk the 20k. This year [2017] though, I’ll be undertaking
the 30k for the first time – I feel it’s time to push myself a little further
now! Then the year after [2018] I’m going take the 40k challenge to celebrate my
70th birthday.

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">J.W.<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> We love your enthusiasm James… just how many times
have you taken part?

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">J.K.<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> So far ten times. I joined the first ever walk in 2006 and haven’t
looked back! This year will be my 11th Just Walk and I’m determined
to keep doing it for as long as I can.

“Life is
far too short; get out there and engage with the world”

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">J.W.<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> Many of our Just Walkers love to fundraise for
charity; others just crave the personal challenge – what is it that drives your
enthusiasm to Just Walk every year?

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">J.K.<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> When I became semi-retired, I started walking to stay fit, healthy and
active, but one of my biggest motivations is my grandson, Riley; he was born
with a cleft palette and had to go through lots of operations at a very young
age. Then, six years ago, he suffered a serious asthma attack and ended up in
intensive care at the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London. The care and
support their staff provided Riley and my family has made me eternally grateful
to them all, so fundraising for their charity is enormously important to me.

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">I’m
driven to give back to others, particularly my grandson, and that was spurred
on after the death my brother. An avid walker and mountaineer, he climbed
Kilimanjaro in Kenya years ago, but after collapsing, he passed away in a
nearby town. That made me realise life is far too short; you should get out
there and engage with the world.

it is nice to find someone that matches my pace and rhythm along the way. Last
year I walked a large part of the route with someone else and at the end we crossed
the finish line together.

“Training!
It’s absolutely essential.”

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">J.K.<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;"> Training! It’s absolutely essential. If possible, start walking around
three months before the event, but certainly as soon as you can. Also, add in
hills to your route – they really do push you, particularly if it’s been
raining.

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">Also
– quality hiking boots! Mine are around £140. You must look after your feet and
keep them protected to avoid blisters. The right socks, too; good ones to
absorb sweat and give you the right support.

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">And
take lightweight, quality gear – you don’t want to be too weighed down on a
long walk.

<span style="font-family: "muli"; margin: 0px;">On
the day, begin at a leisurely pace and get a good rhythm going. Most
importantly, enjoy it; the scenery, the wonderful people and all the wonderful
charities being supported. It’s such a positive day!

unwell with her 4 or 5 children, being taken around the course. Seeing them do
it as a family, supporting each other and supporting a wonderful cause - that
was really touching.

myself that I was so capable; I wouldn’t, and haven’t, missed one since.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Walking one ‘Just

since we started back in 2007, like our lifelong walker James Kinsella, is
simply amazing! James usually undertakes the 20km route but in 2016 he raised
the bar and took part in the 30km event, and to celebrate his 70th

nurse for many years it was only after semi-retiring in 2002 that I found the
time to start walking. I thought it would be a good way to stay fit and healthy
as well as something that I could do anywhere and at any time, especially
around the parks of Crystal Palace in London where I live. It also fitted in
well with my new job at the Courts and Tribunal Services where I’m not as busy
as I was, and now have more time to spend on myself.

is go back and visit family and friends every few months for a catch up. During
that time I love to walk and explore the countryside. I’ve always been an
active person and enjoy being outdoors, especially after having grown-up on a
farm. I’m used to taking myself off in to the countryside and I have to say, it
doesn’t get more rural or picturesque than the wild and windswept landscapes of
Ireland. I also used to enjoy amateur
athletics in my younger years and more recently I have taken up mountain
climbing - I think now with all the walking I do, I am probably healthier than
when I was back in my 30’s and 40’s.”

Look at me, I’m a great example that you can achieve anything if you set your
mind to it. I’m quite an emotionally driven person and for me, it took my
retirement and unfortunately the passing of my brother when he was on a climbing
trip to Mt Kilimanjaro in Kenya, to show me that life is too short and to make
every day count, which is why I started researching various challenges I could
take part in. Another big reason I wanted to participate in a challenge, to be
able to fundraise and give something back to a worthwhile charity, is for my very
special grandson, Riley. Riley was born with a cleft lip and palate, and had to
endure various operations, all at a very young age. 6 years ago Riley had a
very serious asthma attack which ended up with him being admitted into
intensive care. Thankfully with the care and support of the staff at the Evelina
London Children’s Hospital he is now a well, happy and thriving little boy. We
are so grateful to the hospital as a family so this is my way of supporting
them and saying a massive thank you. His
mum and dad also set up the ‘Riley Carp Challenge’ annual charity fishing
competition which raises much needed funds for the Evelina Children’s Hospital
who treat and care for many brave children like Riley and has successfully
raised over £3000 to date." If you would like to support James and donate to his chosen charity, the Evelina Children’s Hospital please click here.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">“I sometimes surprise myself that I have
achieved these Just Walk challenges. I remember my first walk, it was a really
emotional moment when I completed the route as I was so pleased and proud that
I was capable of finishing, and now I wouldn’t miss taking part in any of them.
That said, it does take a lot of training and hard work beforehand so I feel
fully prepared for the challenge ahead. I usually walk 20 miles a week around
the parks in London and then leading up to the event I increase the distance
each week up to a mileage of about 35 miles a week. Over the years this is what
I’ve found to be the best training that suits me and ensures I am fit and
healthy going into the walk.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">My best training advice for first timers,
is to start walking about three months before the event and make sure you add
hills into your training as there are quite a few on the Just Walk routes which
can be quite a challenge, especially if it has been raining beforehand. Invest
in some good quality hiking boots and socks as well; you need to look after
your feet and keep them supported and protected from blisters. On the day
itself, take it all at your own pace, start off at a leisurely pace and find
your rhythm, but most of all - enjoy it! It is such a fabulous day with the
stunning Sussex scenery all around you, wonderful people to talk to, and great
charities being supported, you can’t help but smile and feel positive.”

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">“I like to walk by myself to start with,
so I can find and set my own pace and then I usually meet people along the route
to have a chat with. The great thing about this day is that everyone has a
story as to why they are walking, so it’s nice to hear and it just makes you
think ‘I’m so glad I did this; people are so kind and caring’. The atmosphere
is really great, there is always someone to keep you company; last year I found
someone to walk with and we crossed the finish line together, which was nice.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">I’m quite impatient so although the walk
isn’t a competition I am quite competitive with myself and usually finish in
the top five of my group. My quickest
20km time was 3hrs 20 minutes, and last year’s 30km took me 5hrs 20mins – I am
hoping to knock a half hour off that in 2017! Having said that, I don’t
walk to get a personal best, it’s all about finishing the race for my chosen
charity. If I can knock 5-10 minutes off my best time that would be an added
bonus.”

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">“Every year I look forward to Just Walk
and think that they won’t get any better but they do – every year beats the
last one. I have so many touching memories especially over the last 10 years
with people from all walks of life supporting and helping one another. This is
why I think Just Walk is so special, it brings out the best in people and I for

So, I looked in to it further, gave it a try and that was

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">I always walk the 60km route and aim to finish
around 9pm. I chose this route so I could have something to aim for, I find
it’s also a great barometer check for my health. I enjoy long distances and
setting myself challenging goals.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">I have participated in Just Walk for the last 8
years and last year out of 75 people walking the 60km route I came in the top

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">It started as I wanted to stay active and keep fit
but having walked for so many years now I love the social aspect of the walk,
making friends along the way and meeting lots of new and interesting people.
I’m a bit of a rebel so also want to prove that age doesn’t mean anything, you
can achieve whatever you put your mind to.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">I also raise money for my local hospice when taking
on these Just Walk challenges, it’s a great way for me to give something back.
My daughter is a Macmillan nurse and last year she supported me on the walk,
she waved me off at the start, met me halfway through the route and then was
there at the finishing line which was so lovely to see. She also made me a
scrapbook afterwards for my 80th birthday full of photos of me
throughout the walk as well as messages and drawings from my family which I
will treasure forever.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">I normally walk on my own so I can set my own pace
that I’m comfortable with and then just chat and meet up with people as we walk
along. The social aspect of walking was an unexpected surprise but is one of my
favourite parts of the walk.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">Yes, I live in North Malvern, Worcestershire so I
find walking along the stunning Malvern Hills ridge<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"> which<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;"> keeps me fit. After Christmas and through to the date of the Just Walk,
I walk to the ridge and back every week which is approximately 20 miles as well
as walking with my local ramblers group. I also enjoy spinning classes down at
my local gym, I like to stay fit and active as you can probably tell.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">Train – you absolutely must do this so you are
fully prepared, especially for the BIG 60km route. Include hill walking in your
training as there are a few on this route and you don’t want to be caught
unawares.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">It is also worthwhile investing in decent kit, so
walking boots and socks are essential and a
lightweight backpack. Don’t make the mistake I made a few years ago
where I carried an excess weight in my backpack which caused me considerable
problems.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt;">I have so many but one that sticks out in my mind
is a memory from about 3 or 4 years ago where a group of soldiers (I think
cadets) where walking the 60km route like myself and they shot off at the
start, all guns blazing (not literally). About three quarters of the way around
I found one leaning against a fence, he couldn’t walk and was saying he
couldn’t finish. I spoke to him and managed to help motivate him to continue.
We then came across 2 more of his group with cramp and serious blisters. Again
after talking to them, we all continued together and I felt great pride
watching them cross the finish line together arm in arm to the acclaim of the
crowd. I followed behind them at a discreet
distance. They thanked me for my encouragement,
and said that without my support they would have not finished.
